It’s been a long off season – longer than any I can remember and we have had to suffer thru a bad economy, a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, global warming, the constant negative rhetoric between the ultra-liberal Democrats and the uber-conservative Republicans (both of which I have come to despise), two continuing wars draining our funds and our youth and then the worst of it all – the LeBron James ESPN special and the indiscretions of Tiger Woods.  Then you add in the interminable MLB and NBA seasons, a Winter Olympics with no snow and way too many of those goofy snowboarding half-pipe and mogul skiing events, doped up Tour-de-France bike riders, god knows how many 1-0 World Cup matches, and my kitchen re-modeling project and you know why I have damn-near reached my limit.  Yet peaking over the horizon and less than two weeks away is an oasis of pure enjoyment and a sanctuary from life’s trials and troubles – College Football and it’s little sidekick, the NFL.  Oh sure, just like Esmeralda’s sanctuary, we have to put up with our Quasimodo (Nick Saban) and our gargoyles (Joe Paterno, Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Brett Farve, Jerry Jones, etc.) – but they are our Quasi’s and gargoyles and they are a part of the game we love so I guess that we love them in our own way (some more difficult than others).
